It’s that time of year again! Tournament time. All currently enrolled students ages 3-16 in Mo Duk Pai are welcome to attend our 2019 annual Spring Kid’s Tournament. The format will be familiar to all who have attended before:
8:30-9:00 Doors open, warmup time and time to hear the rules of the event.
9:00-10:00 Grappling
10:00-11:00 Forms
11:00-Noon Sparring
We also stick a mystery division in there somewhere. Want to know what it is? I’m not telling (mostly because I don’t know). It’s a mystery but if you register early, YOU could win the opportunity to CHOOSE the mystery division. That’s right! Register before April 27th and you are entered to win the amazing power of telling us what the mystery division is.
Divisions for all events will be made at the time of the tournament. We will do our best to divide students up according to size, age and skill level. There will be medals for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in all divisions.
This event is sliding scale admission. This means students pay what they feel they can afford. All money goes to the MDP association and making our system more awesome.
The rules:
For grappling, students can choose to play to submission or for position. If students play for position then a point will be awarded for a pin that is held for 3 seconds. Pins that score are: mount, side control or the many variations of those two positions. The first student to 3 points wins or if time runs out (4 minutes), then the student with the most points wins. In event of a tie, the match will continue until one student scores. If students play to submission, the simple way to win is to make the other student tap. No foot locks, knee locks, hip locks, or spinal locks will be allowed. If no one gets a submission, the referee will award the win to the more dominant player (more time on top, more submission attempts, got the throw at the beginning, etc.) The referee will be able to call the match at any time for safety reasons. Students may also choose to start from kneeling or standing. If students choose to start from kneeling, then later, during the match, if both students stand up, the match will reset to kneeling. If students choose to start from standing, then one or both students may stand back up during the match whenever they want/can. Grappling will be run as a double elimination tournament.
For forms, students will be called up one at a time and show their form. They will get a score from three judges. These scores will be added together for a total score. After all students have performed, the student with the biggest total gets 1st place and so on. If there is a tie, students will be asked to perform again and may choose to do a different form if they like. In larger divisions, the first three students will go through their form and NOT be given a score initially. They will then be called back up to be given a score. The point of this is for the referees to get a feel for the skill level in the division.
For sparring, we will be doing point sparring. This means all that is required to score is light contact to the head or body. The match will break after each point. Rounds will be two minutes and the first student to 5 points wins. If time runs out, the person with the most points wins. If there is a tie, students will continue to play until time runs out. The referee can call the match at any time for safety concerns. Sparring will be run as a double elimination tournament. The referee can call the match at any time for safety concerns. Students will be penalized for excessive contact to help encourage controlled (safe) strikes with contact.

Forms, sparring, and grappling! Our once a year tournament is here. Sign up to participate in one, two, or all three events.
We will do our best to create fair divisions based on who shows up. For sparring and grappling, this will be based on size, age, gender, and skill level. For forms divisions will be created based on age and skill.
All are welcome! You need not be a Mo Duk Pai student to participate.
For the grappling section, a Gi is required. If you have a belt, you can wear it but a belt is not required. If you are a BJJ practitioner and you are of white or blue belt rank, you are welcome! We don’t have students at the rank of purple or higher so (for now) we’re keeping things where are students are at! There will be no points in the matches – you either win or lose by submission or it is a draw. We will discuss specifics of the rules the day of the tournament. Grappling starts at 9am but please arrive early so you can hear the rules!
For the forms section, students are expected to perform a “traditional” form – that simply means it is one you learned from a teacher, not one you are making up on the spot. No music is allowed during the performance.
For sparring, we will be doing point sparring – meaning once a hit is scored, the participants will be separated before the match starts again. Light contact is allowed to the head, body, and groin. Students are expected to wear gloves, boots, and a mouth piece. Male students are expected to wear a cup. You can wear other reasonable protective gear like shin guards or forearm guards but it is not required.
